Paraphrasing Excerpt

Any stakeholder in the healthcare financing field, including patients, regulatory authorities, and providers, expects that providers will follow evidence-based practice (EBP). Most patients require more evidence-based treatment, yet there is an abundance of research to inform clinical practice. Two historic studies, one being conducted in the United States (McGlynn et al., 2003) and another in Australia (Runciman et al., 2012), give an estimated 55 and 57 percent of adherence to clinical practice standards, respectively.

However, there needs to be more population-level figures for healthcare quality. To compare the given treatment against nationally accepted practices, in both studies, a random sample of countrywide medical records was studied. The studies find that almost 40 percent of patients are not treated according to evidence, or worse, do not take treatment that is known to be dangerous or ineffective (McGlynn et al., 2003; Runciman et al., 2012).

There has been a lot of speculation regarding the challenge of providing care advice that is based on evidence. Loannidis et al. (2017) indicate that PubMed receives some 1 million new articles annually. Besides care, healthcare providers should always seek, appraise, and integrate new evidence in their practice. The thing is that this is not always the case in the workplace of numerous doctors (Li et al., 2018).

Various models have been developed to assist nurses in conducting EBP (Titler, 2018). Although there are variations in express requirements, the majority of them follow a standard pattern, i.e., starting with a diagnosis of a clinical problem, proceeding to evidence synthesis, and finishing with implementation and evaluation (Cullen et al., 2018). The emphasis of EBP models is on systemic evidence integration, as opposed to the clinician-patient level, which is the primary emphasis of evidence-based medicine (Straus, 2018).

The Iowa Model is one of several evidence-based practice models that are applied in the United States (Iowa Model Collaborative, 2018). The method was invented two and a half decades ago by nursing professors and personnel at the University of Iowa Hospital (Titler, 2018). The model was revisited and reviewed extensively last year (in 2017) (Iowa Model Collaborative, 2018).

More thorough spread and adoption of evidence-based practice (EBP) models have been requested, even though most of the models were introduced at least twenty years ago, since their implementation across organizations and countries differs significantly (Melnyk, 2017). The main reason why I decided to conduct this research was to get to know more about nursing experience with the Iowa Model in order to be able to implement it in other health care institutions.

It is easy to get distracted in interpretive descriptive investigation by concentrating on other issues other than its original purpose (Teodoro, 2018). As we learned more and more about the EBP environment, we broadened our view to encompass all of its factors.
