Introduction
NURS 600 Assignment 1.2 is about selecting a nursing theorist and reflecting on their work. Dorsey and Murdaugh, the two who have introduced injustice to the profession of nursing as significant players of the nursing theory, have significantly aided the understanding and development of nursing care (Fariba Hosseinzadegan et al., 2024). It provides the theoretical twists that impart knowledge on the key aspects of nursing, such as health behavior and health promotion. Dorsey and Murdaugh, based on their relevance and applicability to the present-day nursing practice, formed the basis on which the explanation of the Dorsey and Murdaugh was done in this explanation paper.
We read the theories since we desire to learn so many different things which affect health habits and what kind of things will produce positive health conditions in individuals, family groups, a community, or society. Dorsey and Murdaugh, or even other environmental activists, will be great sources of information that should be involved in evidence-based practice and, hence, help in improving patient care. The reasons why we decided to take just two individuals, i.e., Dorsey and Murdaugh, as our moving force and why their theories have made contributions to the development of the art and science of nursing will be discussed in this assignment.
Rationale for Selection
Dorsey and Murdaugh were selected as the theorists who have been known to contribute greatly to the nursing theory, which was focused on behavioral health and promotion (Froncek, 2020). The framework of their theory is described with underlining that provides a well-developed meaning of the interaction of individual activity, sociocultural circumstances, and the health outcomes. To illustrate the health behavior change, we will study the work and get tips that may be effective and helpful to promote health and prevent getting sick. Further, the theories espoused by Dorsey and Murdaugh are in line with the objective of the currently undertaken course, the integration of the application of nursing theories during the treatment process of patients, as well as the enhancement of patient health outcomes.
It is these group members who suggested the concepts of a holistic approach to illnesses, patient empowerment, and the social and environmental determinants of health, the main principles of nursing practice; thus, their theories became highly informed and worth following by us students as well. What we will consider in the work of Dorsey and Murdaugh will be a critical analysis of nursing theory, which will increase our understanding and help us to develop our clinical expertise in a number of practice environments.
Overview of Dorsey and Murdaugh’s Theories
The two theories by Dorsey and Murdaugh are a wide scope of driving concepts and laws that have a tremendous effect on nursing care. In their theory, the outcomes point to an interest, a personal, and an environmental aspect in the health behaviors of people. Their works are focused on the fact that the social-cultural context of the occurrence of health behaviors is to be comprehended, and that the relevant interventions adopted are to be designed in such a manner that they respond to the needs and wants of the people that are culturally/socially specific. Relevant concepts, such as self-efficacy, health beliefs, and social support, are a lot related to health behavior, and these are key concepts in the theoretical framework of Dorsey and Murdaugh (Niman et al., 2024).
In the list of the above values, patient empowerment as well as the interaction between a patient and a provider are the most associated with nursing values. These help a nurse realize that a nurse-patient collaboration is an indispensable aspect of health care. They manage to make the explanations of the change in health behavior scientifically significant information with their theory, stating the basic mechanisms of change, which form facts about the prevention of the disease and the creation of well-being.
Strategies for Presentation
We need to make our population aware of the theories by Dorsey and Murdaugh in a manner that brings to the limelight important things that define their systems without losing their attention and knowledge of their systems. Mainly, the speech will talk in detail about the backgrounds of the implementers and how they were applied to the nursing theory (Chiu et al., 2022). It lays a good base around which the discussion of such issues as self-efficacy, beliefs in health, and social networks (the most important aspects of their theoretical framework) can be held. Illustrations like charts, diagrams, and infographics can be extremely useful in providing an alternative point of view on the visibility and showing how these relevant concepts are interrelated.
Besides, real-life examples that are applicable to the issue might help to bridge challenging theoretical aspects to practice (Chiu et al., 2022). The audience is able to better comprehend the theories of Dorsey and Murdaugh in their everyday living and make their health central in their lives.
Knowledge of the complex problems should be straightforward, summarized, and simple. It can be used as an analogy or metaphor to simplify big and difficult ideas and, therefore, present them more easily to various listeners. Furthermore, interactive elements like Q&A sessions as well as group discussions will give the students who are in that mode an in-depth understanding of the subject.
Conclusion
In short, nurses who would prefer to ensure that their health behavior and promotion attitude is valid should bear in mind that this theory is necessary. These interprofessional groups generate wonders regarding the frailty of interaction between the behaviors of individuals, the socio-cultural context of an individual, and health. Such findings can help us to come up with the relevant skills that would enable us to create better healthcare systems, based on the needs of the patients, to deliver more patient-centric care.
The findings by Dorsey and Murdaugh will be offered in an easy-to-understand and engaging manner, thereby contributing to the awakening of understanding, appeal, and applicability in the minds of the target group. At the end of this project, we envision having developed some intellectual stimulation and having set themes on personalized means of wellness and illness prevention in different healthcare facilities.
