Skills that will help students resolve conflict

Conflict management is essential in the organization as it helps maintain a peaceful and productive working environment and good relationships at the workplace. This is a test based on a scenario in which Sarah and John were on a team and, due to a disagreement of thought in the project they were working on, they had to resort to personal attack and negative communication. The research will also examine the conflict management process at the beginning, the weaknesses of the management process, and how the conflict can be handled differently, for example by systematic communication and active listening.

Case Scenario

At one of the companies where I worked, there was a problem between two of the employees, Sarah and John, on the same team with the same project. The disagreement was due to the disagreement of the project vision, whereby Sarah needed to move the project to the next level, while John wanted to follow the traditional method. The disagreement turned to an ad hominem, and so there was a lack of cooperation and coordination. I tried to get the two sides to meet in the middle and to find a solution, but at the time, I didn’t. However, the meeting was not well organized, and the conflict was not addressed, which negatively impacted the project and the team.

Description of the Conflict

The reasons for the conflict between Sarah and John were that they had conflicting project strategies. Sarah believed that there was a different way to go about the task, while John believed that the conventional method would work best. This conflict led to some argumentation, back-and-forth, where both sides were getting defensive and not giving way. The lack of communication and respect between the parties also helped to create the conflict, and Tingvold and Munkejord (2021) illustrated the emergence of personal animosity out of the conflict. Hence, team efficiency decreased, and the time to complete the project was longer.

How the conflict was managed in the past. How the conflict was resolved in the past?

I have passed on the message to them that they need to come and sit down and discuss it so that they can both have a say. But the meeting was not very well organized, and I didn’t set up a code of ethics with regard to the language that my participants used. Thus, the discussion turned into an argument with the participants intercutting and making personal comments as noted by Tingvold and Munkejord (2021). Nothing I did at the time involved conflict-solving or any strategies for decreasing conflict at that time. So the fight went on, and the team’s morale was negatively affected.

The methods used to settle the conflict were

At that time, I did not use any conflict-solving strategies. I was quite random when it came to solving the problem,s and this was not very effective in solving the problems. I did not set up a framework where the issues and perspectives of the two parties could be expressed fully and equally, nor did I make sure that they heard one another and tried to understand. Also, I didn’t mention the causes of the conflict and the possible solutions to the conflict. The war thus remained, ed and the team still faced difficulties in achieving the desired results.

Doing Things Differently at the Conflict. Doing Things Differently towards the Conflict

In the event that this conflict had to be repeated, I would have to be better prepared and organized. First, I would meet one-on-one with each of the parties to hear their side of the story. This would enable me to get to the bottom of the conflict and find out what we have in common. Then I would arrange meetings with both parties and establish the rules for the dialogue and listening to each other based on Zaripour’s (2024) study. Also, lso I would use the “I” messages to lessen the sense of confrontation and to allow both parties to voice how they feel without hurting the other. In addition, I would try to determine a middle ground and ways of finding a middle ground that would be mutually agreeable. I believe that a more structured and, at the same time, more empathetic approach to the conflict will help solve the conflict more efficiently and improve relations in the team and the outcomes of the projects.

A culture of safety and respect is promoted through strategies such as Strategies include

To promote safety and respect at the workplace, the following measures would be taken: First, I would set up the rules and regulations on how to handle conflicts in the team so that everyone knows what to do when a conflict arises. I would also make sure all staff are trained in communication and conflict resolution techniques and that they listen, understand, and respect the opinions of others. Plus, I will make sure that all the members of the team voice their opinions and give their thoughts and concerns in a respectful manner. Human resource development about team building and training on emotional intelligence could be implemented (Watanabe et al., 2024) as other measures to improve the staff relationships and establish a healthy organizational climate. I would like to establish a culture that discourages conflicts and bullying in the workplace and tries to solve all conflicts politely and professionally to reduce the number of conflicts in the workplace.

Conclusion

John and Sarah’s situation proved that there is a need for correct conflict management strategies and fostering a safe and healthy workplace. Looking at the previous way of handling conflicts and analyzing the mistakes made, I have come up with a more organized and understanding way of handling conflicts. These strategies will not only help with the conflict resolution process, but they will also help those involved to build a healthy workplace environment where they are appreciated and valued.
