Personal Leadership Philosophies
Nursing leadership is about inspiring and guiding others towards a shared objective and maintaining the best standards of service and moral values. Personal leadership philosophy assists me in explaining the best leadership and how my strengths and values apply to my leadership style. This assignment discusses my core values, mission, and vision statements, and findings of the CliftonStrengths Assessment. Two major behaviors will also be chosen by me to enhance and outline a development plan to achieve my vision.
Core Values
Honesty
My personal and professional life is based on honesty. I have to tell the truth to patients, colleagues, and myself as a nurse. Being honest will foster trust, communication, and informed decision-making. This is a fundamental value that motivates me to make ethical decisions in challenging circumstances and practice with utmost ethical principles.
Compassion
Compassion drives my commitment to offering caring and holistic care. It motivates me to understand and address the physical, emotional, and psychological needs of my patients. Compassionate care improves patient outcomes, therapeutic relationships, and relationships between nurses and patients (Younas et al., 2023). This is the fundamental principle of contact that is based on compassion, respect, and the sincere intent of reducing suffering.
Responsibility
Responsibility means being accountable and trustworthy. I psychologically own my acts and obligations, keeping my pledges and doing my job. Nursing depends on this value for patient safety, care quality, and professional relationships. Being responsible involves being reliable, having high standards, and aiming for perfection.
Collaboration
Teamwork and working together are also stressed in collaboration to realise the objectives. Collaborating with people in other disciplines enhances patient care, as well as making working in the healthcare sector a conducive environment. My fundamental value is that teamwork, free communication, and respect for each other will resolve issues and yield the best outcomes.
Mission and Vision Statement
Mission Statement
My mission is to care with compassion, evidence-based care that acknowledges patient dignity and individuality. I encourage a positive and cooperative working environment, and I also aim at developing my colleagues. My core values of honesty, compassion, responsibility, and teamwork are put into practice to help me improve the lives of the people I serve.
Vision Statement
I would like to become a visionary nursing leader who has a reputation for providing holistic care to patients, practicing ethically, and empowering them. I would like to create a healthcare system that provides patients with high-quality and personalized treatment and gives nurses the chance to achieve success. My goal is to promote nursing practice and the healthcare system via continual learning and innovation.
Analysis of Clifton Strengths Assessment
Arranger, Analytical, Relator, Responsibility, and Belief were my best five themes as per Clifton Strengths Assessment. My leadership style and strengths are shown in each of the themes. Being an Arranger, I organize and organize resources. This strength is needed to control challenging activities and make sure that nothing conflicts. As a leader, I will be able to maximize the performance of a team, manage resources efficiently, and respond to changing conditions. My ability to adapt and organizational skills enable me to cope with unexpected challenges.
The theme of Analytics indicates that I have a predilection towards seeking causes. Critical thinking is necessary in the process of making informed judgments and dealing with challenges. Analytical skills can assist me in evaluating facts, analyzing other perspectives, and developing evidence-based leadership strategies. Such practices will ensure that the judgments are informed by facts and best practices.
Thirdly, Responsibility is my trustworthiness and reliability. I take accountability for my actions and strive to achieve the best. This quality develops trust and reliability as a leader who promises to keep his/her commitments and fulfill his/her obligations. It means to me ethical practice, and team and patient well-being.
I cherish tight relationships and like working with people as a Relator. This is my strength, and it assists me in building a relationship of trust with colleagues and patients. My relationship skills as a leader enable me to develop a team, foster teamwork, and get results. Enhancing my relationships with the team members can assist me in understanding their needs and capacity, which is a crucial leadership aspect. The Belief theme demonstrates my dedication to beliefs and a cause. The strength shapes my actions and choices to achieve my goals and moral convictions in the future. My leadership is based on strong purpose and values, and inspires others to lead. It promotes ethical practice and collaboration, as well.
Two Key Behaviors to Strengthen
Adaptability
Flexibility is incorporated in my Arranger theme, and learning to be adaptable will assist me in dealing with the uncertainties of healthcare. This means that to be a good leader, I need to be resourceful and cool under pressure, change strategies, and assist my team to change (Schulze and Pinkow, 2020). I will be able to cope with confidence and resilience in difficult situations, as I will be able to strengthen this behavior.
Empathy
Empathy is important to understand and fulfill patient and colleague emotional and psychological needs (Nembhard et al., 2022). My Relator theme focuses on my affection towards close relationships, but empathy will broaden my relationships. This is the conduct needed to treat our patients with mercy, see them happy, and have a healthy and collaborative work environment. I will understand the individuals I care about better and react to them in an empathetic manner because of their unique reactions and feelings.
Development Plan for Improving Key Behaviors
Improving Adaptability
Continued learning and education will enable me to be informed of the nursing developments and best practices. Increasing my knowledge and skills will aid in adjusting to the changes in healthcare and developing innovative solutions. I will, as an example, take a course on future healthcare technology and adaptive leadership courses. Moreover, I will also actively pursue daily flexibility and practice. This could be either switching the positions of teams, taking part in activities outside my area of scope, or working in other clinical environments. An example is assisting in other areas other than mine, which will challenge me and enhance my flexibility.
In addition, examining my experiences and getting feedback from others would assist me in growing and learning through the challenges that they have encountered in the past. Reflective practice can help me to develop my change and uncertainty management practices. This technique involves maintaining a reflective journal and debriefing my staff following big assignments. Also, practicing and thinking fast will enable me to be able to think quickly and give unique solutions to unexpected issues (Chan et al., 2023). Engage in simulations and case studies, and workshops on problem-solving. My team will be presented with problem-based learning and scenario-based training by me.
Improving Empathy
I shall engage in active listening by listening to the person speaking, understanding what they say, and responding. Reduce distractions, look in their eyes, and ask them open-ended questions to understand their side of the story. To illustrate, I will pay attention to the problems of patients without interruption during patient contacts. Moreover, I will be training in empathy and seminars to understand and identify the feelings of others. The common programs and practices offered in these programs include perspective-taking, emotional management, and compassionate communication, which I will attend and practice regularly.
In addition, establishing credible relationships with colleagues and patients will enhance my empathy. It involves genuine care for their well-being, being aware of their sentiments, and providing emotional assistance. I will have team-building and patient support groups to establish relationships. Moreover, thinking about and solving my biases often makes me open my mind and engage in every conversation with an open mind. This practice will help me to understand and respect other people better and their different experiences and feelings. This strategy entails diversity and inclusion training and self-reflection.
Achieving Personal Vision
My individual vision is to be an inspiring nursing leader. There will be clear and measurable objectives that will direct my success. I would like to complete three adaptive leadership and healthcare technology courses of an advanced nature to be adaptive. My empathy objectives are two empathy training sessions and quarterly team-building activities. Additionally, self-evaluation and feedback from colleagues will also help to monitor my progress. Peer appraisals, performance assessment, and reflective journaling will assist me in determining areas that I need to improve. I will seek feedback regularly on my adaptability and empathy activities with my mentor and peers.
In addition, the advice and support can be provided by mentors and colleagues. I will have frequent meetings with a transformative leader who will be able to advise. Also, I will establish a professional development support system with co-workers. Another aspect of development skills and knowledge that is vital is putting them into practice. I will apply adaptive leadership and compassionate communication in patient care and collaboration (Kuluski et al., 2020).
As an illustration, in the process of consulting the patients, I will use adaptive problem-solving solutions and engage in active listening. I will also need to continuously ponder and stick to my core values and have my actions and decisions align with my vision of transformative leadership. I will look at my vision on a regular basis, change and keep the strategies and values. This strategy will require leading by example and the establishment of an ethical practice and culture of constant improvement.
Colleagues’ Feedback
My co-workers provided me with a lot of information on the way to leverage my strengths as a leader. They complimented me on my organizational skills and critical thinking skills, as these can be used to make good decisions and make teams work. My talents in organizing and analyzing could be helpful to the team and enhance efficiency and evidence-based practice. My fellow co-workers recommended that I increase these strengths by mentoring others.
This would assist the team and enhance my leadership. My strong determination to my core values motivated the team. Co-workers encouraged me to encourage and model ethical practice and integrity within the team to leverage this strength. This would help foster an environment of honesty and ethical behavior, in line with the transformational leader ideas (Broome and Marshall, 2021).
Conclusion
On a final note, developing a leadership philosophy has assisted me in identifying my core values, strengths, and weaknesses. Upon going through my Clifton Strengths Assessment and getting feedback on my strengths and weaknesses in a group of colleagues, I came up with a leadership development plan to enhance my most important behaviors.
The ability to embrace flexibility and sympathy to be a resilient and compassionate leader will be what makes my vision of becoming a transformative nursing leader come true. Through lifelong learning, contemplation, and adherence to my core values, I aim to enhance the lives of my patients and colleagues, the nursing practice, and a supportive and ethical health care environment.
