- NURS 610 Assignment 4.1 Screening and Immunization Summary
Name: __________
Identify the risk factors of Daisy, such as BMI, social habits, comorbidity, medications, and contraindications to taking birth control. Decide whether or not it is safe to administer Daisy’s contraception.
Daisy is a 18-year-old, healthy woman with a healthy BMI of 23, who has no major comorbidity and is not taking any medication that would be contraindicated with the use of hormonal contraception. She is not a smoker and she denies the use of alcohol but she informs that she smokes marijuana occasionally which lessens the chances of her developing complications such as thromboembolism.
She does not have any personal history of diabetes, lupus, and liver disease, but this information can be found in her family history. It is possible to start taking birth control because of her general health status and the lack of contraindications, and Daisy should be provided with the counseling about the ways of using condoms regularly to avoid STIs (Workowski et al., 2021).
Based on what you know so far, what three concerns do you have for Daisy?
Daisy has three health concerns, i.e.,; she fails to use condoms regularly, which exposes her to the risk of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs); she has minimal information on the importance of being vaccinated against some diseases when travelling to a new country, e.g., hepatitis A and B; her family has the history of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, lupus, and liver disease (Workowski et al., 2021).
Using the CDC calculator, determine what Daisy needs for vaccinations and for her upcoming trip to Brazil. List 4 of them.
Yellow Fever most of Brazil is considered to be at risk, or endemic/transitional to yellow fever. According to CDC the yellow fever vaccine should be used when travelling to such locations. 2. Typhoid Typhoid vaccination is recommended as Brazilian areas (especially small cities, rural, or where food/water sanitation is not so ensured) are susceptible to typhoid through tainted food or water. 3. Hepatitis A CDC recommends vaccination of Hepatitis A to almost all the people traveling to Brazil because there is a possibility of contaminated food or water even in urban areas. 4. Routine catch-ups/boosters Although she may have had numerous childhood vaccines, it is important to keep things up to date: Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) (with 2 doses insured) Tdap / Td booster (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024).
Determine when Daisy will need the Pap test utilizing the USPSTF. List one more screening activity that would be appropriate for her age. List two topics you would provide for further education.
According to the USPSTF, Pap test screening cervical cancer should start at age 21; hence, not yet Daisy requires a screening of the same. A proper screening exercise at her age includes regular screening of sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia and gonorrhea as she is sexually active and irregular in wearing condoms (Silver et al., 2021). Two important fields of knowledge that should be provided to Daisy are safe sex practices which will reduce the risk of STIs and the use of effective contraception practices which reduce the risk of unwanted pregnancy.
