Reflection
As a charge nurse in my role as a nurse, I was given the opportunity to take on numerous roles that, for me, embody the meaning of caring for patients and being a leader. The reflection will include feelings and experiences of delegation and caseload management, the key roles of charge nurse, self-evaluation of decision making, and three experiences that are relevant to future practice. (Jubinville et al., 2023).
A huge part of the simulation for me was to find and assign logical acuities to a variety of patients and justify why each acuity was given to each patient. The acuity is important as it helps to determine the care that the patient requires as well as the severity of the patient’s illness. These tiers are used to signify the severity of a patient’s condition and what kind of care should be taken towards that patient in hospital conditions.
The role of charge nurse was exciting, but at the same time, there was some apprehension in accepting it. This has instilled in me a level of responsibility to ensure I’m taking care of my patients well, and at the same time, my team is efficient. I was told that the process of distributing assignments encompassed sharing of responsibilities as well as authority to control activities under them; I had to be available to support the activities of my team members to accomplish their tasks, as I had to supply the resources they would require. Sometimes the patients’ needs and the type of care they needed were overwhelming me, particularly if it was a very high acuity patient. But, at the same time, I was satisfied as team members worked to provide quality care, and communication, both its quantity and effectiveness, is important.
Summary of Charge Nurse Responsibilities
The charge nurse is an important figure within healthcare facilities as he/she has the following responsibilities. Based on the patient’s medical condition, nurses make decisions regarding patient conditions and the specific level of acuity (high, medium, or low acuity). Delegation of the different tasks to the different members according to their knowledge of the patient’s cases guarantees that the patient’s needs are met, as much as possible (Jubinville et al., 2023). Often, there is a need to coordinate with physicians and other health care professionals to effectively and efficiently utilize the resources and personnel at their disposal. Managing the healthcare staff and providing instructions for their practice, if required, for motivation and achievement.
During certain points in the simulation, I chose to allocate patients and distribute staff in the following ways. Some were efficient, including evaluating the acuity levels of patients and the ability to associate each of them with the respective doctors. This indicated that the patients with high acuity did receive specialized care and attention, while the rest with medium and low acuity were well Bouquet and effectively dealt with without over-burdening the consumable resources (Jubinville, Longpré, et al., 2023).
A few problems arose with me, though. For instance, one time I had a patient with a complicated condition, and I didn’t realize it at the time, so I didn’t make a referral to see a specialist until sometime later. Upon recompletion, it will be considered important to review patient history and diagnosis prior to determining acuity levels (Rojas‐Rivera et al., 2022). Also, I could see that I would do my best to get more and more people involved and let everyone speak about their concerns, according to their task assignments.
Application to Practice
When considering my learning from practice as a charge nurse, I identified three key learning points which may guide my practice in the future. The importance of acuity levels has helped to validate my understanding of the need to attend to patient needs. I will make sure that I pay close attention to the patients that I am attending to and respond to their needs in the best way possible. I learned that delegation not only enhances the speed and productivity of the team, but it’s also a way to develop team members.
Regarding future developments on the problem, I will ensure that the work tasks are assigned properly to enhance jobholders’ skills, and if more assistance is required, to find other people who can help. They were all problems that were revealed in the simulation to illustrate how healthcare is a dynamic environment. I will embrace opinions positively and always strive to improve my skills in dealing with patients and employees.
Conclusion
As a charge nurse, I have learned much about nursing management and how it all functions. I know and understand my feelings, know what my responsibilities are as a nurse, evaluate my performance, and understand the lessons I’ve learned so that I can be a great nurse no matter where I’m working. This reflection will help me to grow in my profession by continually improving my practice and positively affecting my patients.
