The study “Striving for Independence: A Qualitative Study of Women Living with Vertebral Fracture” by Hallberg et al. (2010) examines the everyday challenges faced by women with vertebral fractures. This critique will evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the research design, methods, procedures, and findings based on the criteria and assessment of LoBiondo-Wood and Haber (2018) (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2018). Additionally, this critique will consider how the study contributes to the principles of evidence-based practice (EBP) and its applicability to clinical practice.

Evaluation of the Research Design

Purpose and Research Question

The purpose of this study is to assess how women with vertebral fractures are impacted by these injuries. The research question is focused on the barriers women with disabilities experience in their pursuit of independence (Drisko & Grady, 2019). A qualitative research approach is appropriate for this study as it will capture the barriers and challenges women with vertebral fractures face in their everyday experiences.

Theoretical Framework

Phenomenological research and paradigm form the basis of the study design since the focus of the study is on the participants’ perceptions of their experiences in this research study (Drisko & Grady, 2019). This research framework is suited for the research question since the question will analyze the sense that women make of their social circumstances.

Study Design

Perceptions and experiences of the study participants serve as the main focus of the study; thus, the study adopted a qualitative and phenomenological research design. This research design is most appropriate for the study since it provides a comprehensive and detailed account of the women’s experiences (Drisko & Grady, 2019). The arguments given to justify the study design are, in most cases, valid and concrete, especially the gap and need for qualitative research in vertebral fractures alongside quantitative research.

Sampling

The study participants were purposefully selected and are patients who have experienced vertebral fractures, thus providing the necessary information. The study sample is appropriate and adequate for qualitative research and for the attainment of data saturation (Kim & Jeong, 2024). The diverse participants of the study enhance the external validity of the research findings.

Ethical Considerations

The study was conducted with a lot of emphasis on ethical issues. Participants were informed of their rights, and their confidentiality was guaranteed as soon as they were chosen, and this remained throughout the collection and analysis of data (Kim & Jeong, 2024). This study also received ethical approval from the relevant committees, which makes it ethical.

Evaluation of Methods/Procedures and Results

Data Collection

The rationale behind the researchers’ data collection approach is well articulated. The researchers used interviews, which is a good data collection method for collecting data about the participants’ personal experiences. The interview questions were open, allowing the participants to answer in detail and thus providing the researchers with a good data collection method for detailed data. (LoBiondo-Wood et al., 2018).

Trustworthiness and Rigor

The study employs both credibility and quality in research. Credibility was achieved by member checking, where participants validated the findings, and by triangulation in a variety of data sources to confirm the findings (LoBiondo-Wood et al., 2018). The audit trail is also maintained by the study to show the documented process that was followed in the research.

Data Analysis

The data analysis method shows a good structure. The data were analyzed by using a combination of coding and thematic analysis to describe the main themes and patterns of the findings. The analysis step is well documented, thus enabling the replication of the process easily.

Results and Findings

The results/findings are presented in a good structure that allows easy understanding. The main themes from the study include the struggle for independence and the feelings and experiences described by women living with a ‘fracture ’, as well as the strategies women use to cope and live with their ‘fracture’ (LoBiondo-Wood et al., 2018). The quotes given show the women’s experiences in-depth and illustrate the full and varied nature of their experiences.

Discussion on the Importance of Research and Contribution to EBP

Relevance to Nursing Practice

The findings of this study have high relevance to nursing practice. Understanding the experience of women with vertebral fractures allows healthcare professionals to construct and implement better focused patient care (Galiano et al., 2020). This study highlights the importance of assessing the patient’s complete state of both physical and mental health, as it opens the possibility of comprehensive and substantial improvement to the patient’s quality of life.

Contribution to EBP

This study provides valuable evidence for the framework of evidence-based practice, as it offers qualitative evidence to complement the existing body of quantitative evidence (Galiano et al., 2020). The outcomes of this study can be integrated into clinical practice to adjust and improve the current practices related to vertebral fractures in women.

Applicability to Clinical Practice

This study provides findings that are both easy to operationalize and can be implemented in clinical practice. An example includes using the study’s findings to develop multiple research-based alterable programs that serve the unique needs of female patients with vertebral fractures (Galiano et al., 2020).

Conclusion

In conclusion, the study “Striving for Independence” is published in the Osteoporosis International journal. The study by Hallberg et al. back in 2010 is cited as “Living with Vertebral Fracture: A Qualitative Study of Women” (2010). These findings substantiate evidence-based practice and show how progress in the area of clinical practice can enhance patient outcomes.
